Pen on Fire By Barbara DeMarco-Barrett Women are faced with daily challenges each day as wives, mothers, daughters, employees, etc. For some, there lies within the desire to become a successful author, but with all the demands cast upon them it remains an elusive fantasy.
Well dream no more. "Pen on Fire," by Barbara DeMarco-Barrett, is just the book for those who dare to make it a reality. In a concise, easy to read style, she presents the case that women can find the time to write. If you think you're to busy, check out her responsibilities: she hosts and produces her own radio show, "Writers on Writing," teaches creative writing at the University of California at Irvine and writes for the "Writer" magazine and the Los Angeles Times, plus takes care of her family. Oh my, I almost failed to mention, she also edits the ASJA Monthly, the official publication of the American Society of Journalism and Authors.
The book is divided into seven segments, with topics covering all aspects of the art of writing. At the end of each chapter, there are exercises to get you to put your pen to paper, even if on some days you only have fifteen minutes to spare. She advises us to carry pen and paper with us at all times, being observant to the scenes and words spoken around us. Make lists, do character sketches, reflect on your life - the good times as well as the sad. Write journal entries when you're moved to do so and not just because it's an obligation.
Her advice with regards to agents and the markets is invaluable. You may ask yourself, "What can I accomplish in so little time?" The answer is - plenty. You 'll have generated ideas for poems, essays, short stories, works of nonfiction and even a novel if you so choose. Most importantly she advises to believe in yourself, be ready to sacrifice and you'll reach your goals through hard work and persistence. To all women who wish to be more creative with the spoken word, this book is a must have for your library.
